Dr. Oz: What your coffee preference reveals about your health

"You are what you eat" is a common saying. But licensed clinical psychologist Ramani Durvasula, PhD, claims that you are why you eat, and that by changing your attitude toward food, you can improve every aspect of your life - and that includes changing whether you order decaf coffee with soy milk, a latte, a blended frozen coffee drink or, perchance, straight-up black coffee. Appearing on Dr. Mehmet Oz's talk show on March 25, Ramani explained how to analyze your favorite coffee order and then use that understanding to enhance your mind and body. After analyzing numerous different people, Ramani discovered the following:

  • Black coffee drinkers tend to keep things simple, but can be moody.
  • Latte drinkers (defined as those who want milk and sugar in their coffee) are generous with their time but can get overextended and don't always take care of themselves.
  • Blended coffee drinkers (such as those fancy frozen drinks) try new things, are spontaneous and can be reckless.
  • Specifically ordered coffee drinkers (such as decaf coffee with soy milk) tend to be very aware of their health and make good health choices. However, they can be worriers.

Ramani's take-away message with this analysis: You have the power of choice. You can choose to order a different type of coffee or make a healthier choice in your food selections. Ramani says "the very definition of resilience is your ability to jump out of type when needed." Now that's cool beans!
